The Pua Lei is a great example of a traditional lei panel shirt. During World War II when the shirt makers (and everyone else) were experiencing shortages of just about everything (including fabric), they used what they had on hand. Sometimes this included upholstery fabric. The public needed shirts that lasted, and the durable, heavy fabric shirts were welcomed by the buying public.
